There was/were practice

To practise there was/were I usually do this: put a lot of things on a desk or table and let students look at them for a minute. 

Then they close their eyes and I remove half of the things and replace them with new ones. 

Students look at the desk again and say: 

There weren’t books.

There was a pencil.

There wasn’t a ball.
